Why a pre-shoot is a brilliant idea (especially if you’re camera-shy)

Let’s be honest—being in front of a camera can feel a bit awkward. Not everyone loves the spotlight, and that’s absolutely okay. That’s why I include a pre-shoot (sometimes called an engagement or couple shoot) in all of my main wedding photography packages—and offer it as a standalone option too.

So, what’s a pre-shoot?

It’s a relaxed, informal photo session before your big day—just the two of you, and me, your friendly photographer (promise I’m not scary). We’ll head to a location you love, whether that’s a windswept beach, a favourite woodland walk, or even your own garden. No posing, no pressure—just the chance to get comfortable, have a laugh, and maybe even forget the camera is there at all.

Perfect for nervous couples

If the idea of being photographed makes you squirm a bit, a pre-shoot is genuinely one of the best things you can do. I make extensive use of gentle prompts and natural interaction—not stiff posing or cheesy smiles. You’ll have something else to think about, like whispering a secret to each other, walking hand in hand, or recalling a favourite memory. These little moments spark genuine connection and result in stunning, natural images that feel like you.

A trial run—with real benefits

The pre-shoot is also a fantastic way for me to get to know you. Every couple is different, and it’s a chance to figure out what works—and just as importantly, what doesn’t. Maybe one of you always blinks mid-laugh, or a certain angle just doesn’t feel right. By learning this before the wedding, we save time on the day itself and make sure I’m capturing you both at your very best, right from the start.
